<image:title>Blog - Recovery Is Not Rest: Why Your Body Needs Active Recovery - Introduction</image:title>
<image:caption>Recovery is often misunderstood as complete rest. While rest has its place, effective recovery is about supporting the body’s ability to adapt, repair, and continue moving well. For active individuals, runners, and those with physical jobs, recovery is an essential part of staying comfortable and resilient. What Is Active Recovery? Active recovery involves low-intensity movement and supportive strategies that encourage circulation and tissue repair without placing additional stress on the body. Examples include: Gentle movement Mobility work Walking Soft tissue therapy These approaches help the body recover without becoming stiff or deconditioned.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Runners Get Tight Calves, Quads and Hips (And What Helps) - Introduction</image:title>
<image:caption>Running is a repetitive activity that places consistent stress through the same muscle groups. Over time, this often leads to predictable areas of tightness — particularly in the calves, quadriceps, hips, and sometimes the lower back. Understanding why this happens helps runners manage tightness more effectively. Why Calves Become Tight The calf muscles play a major role in propulsion and shock absorption during running. Calf tightness often increases with: Higher mileage Speed work Hill training As fatigue builds, muscle tone can increase, leading to stiffness and reduced ankle mobility. Why Quadriceps Become Tight The quadriceps absorb load with every stride, particularly during downhill running and long-distance training. Tight quads can contribute to: Knee discomfort Reduced hip extension Altered running mechanics Managing quad tension is important for maintaining efficient movement.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6178110f74a1706f526b2fc9/da307f84-33a1-471d-959e-ec262d29a7ee/DSCF6684.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Why Runners Get Tight Calves, Quads and Hips (And What Helps) - Why Hips Become Tight The hips play a central role in running posture and stride length. Tightness in the hip flexors and surrounding muscles can: Affect pelvic position Increase strain on the lower back Reduce stride efficiency Prolonged sitting outside of training can further contribute to hip tightness. How Massage and Soft Tissue Therapy Help Massage supports runners by: Reducing excessive muscle tone Improving tissue mobility Supporting circulation Improving joint movement Helping restore balance between muscle groups Combined with sensible training and recovery strategies, massage helps runners stay mobile and comfortable. Conclusion Tightness is a normal response to training — but it doesn’t need to become limiting. Targeted soft tissue therapy helps manage common problem areas and supports consistent, comfortable running.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - When Should Runners Get Sports Massage?</image:title>
<image:caption>Introduction Many runners only think about massage when something hurts. However, sports and remedial massage is often most effective when used proactively — supporting the body throughout training rather than reacting to injury. Understanding when massage is most useful can help runners manage fatigue, reduce tightness, and stay consistent with their training. Massage During Base Training Base training is the ideal time to establish good recovery habits. Massage during this phase can help: Maintain tissue health Improve movement efficiency Address early tightness before it builds up Regular treatment at this stage supports resilience as training volume gradually increases. Massage During Peak Training Weeks As mileage and intensity increase, the physical demands on the body rise significantly. Massage during peak training can: Reduce muscle tension Support recovery between sessions Help manage niggles early Maintain joint range of motion This phase is about keeping the body moving well rather than pushing through discomfort.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When Should Runners Get Sports Massage?</image:title>
<image:caption>Massage During Taper Phase Massage during taper should be lighter and focused on recovery rather than deep tissue work. Treatment aims during taper include: Reducing residual muscle tension Supporting relaxation Maintaining normal movement patterns This helps runners feel comfortable and prepared leading into race day. Post-Race Massage After a race, muscles are fatigued and often sore due to prolonged loading. Post-race massage can support: Circulation Reduction of stiffness Restoration of normal movement Overall recovery Timing is important — light treatment is usually best in the first few days, with deeper work introduced later if needed. Conclusion Sports massage isn’t just for injuries. For runners, it works best as part of a structured recovery strategy, supporting the body through every phase of training and helping maintain long-term movement and comfort.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Massage for Marathon Training: How It Supports Your Body. - Introduction Marathon training places consistent physical stress on the body. High mileage, repetitive movement patterns, and limited recovery time can lead to muscle tightness, fatigue, and overuse injuries if recovery isn’t properly managed. Sports and remedial massage plays an important role in supporting the body through training — not just when pain appears, but as part of a proactive recovery and performance strategy. How marathon training affects the body Running places repeated load through the calves, quads, hamstrings, hips, and lower back. Over time, this can lead to: Increased muscle tone and tightness Reduced joint mobility Compensatory movement patterns Accumulated fatigue in soft tissues Without appropriate recovery, these changes can gradually affect comfort, efficiency, and training consistency. How massage supports marathon training Massage and soft tissue therapy can help by: Reducing excessive muscle tension Improving tissue mobility Maintaining range of motion Supporting recovery between training sessions Massage doesn’t replace rest or training adaptation — it supports the body’s ability to recover and adapt.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Newsletter - March 2024 - Hey Everyone. Welcome to my fourth newsletter which will give an update on what I have been doing recently and what I am planning for the coming months. Thankfully we are now into spring and although the weather doesn’t really reflect this, the days are getting longer and I have my fingers crossed for some drier and warmer weather soon. The winter was quite busy for me, with lots for new and regular clients visiting for treatments. I’ve been seeing lots of runners who are training for their spring marathons and it has been good to hear there stories. I was lucky enough to have a winter holiday and visited Thailand in January which was lovely. It was great to escape the winter gloom and see the sunshine, blue skies and to have some wonderful food. I hope you all enjoy the content of this newsletter, please feel free to give me any feedback you have or any ideas you would like to read about in future issues. Happy Reading!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Newsletter - March 2024 - TREATING RUNNERS</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve been treating lots of runners recently, helping to ease their tired legs. With the Manchester, Brighton and London Marathons all planned for next month runners are currently clocking up the training miles. It’s really nice to be part of peoples training programme and to help ease their fatigue, help to achieve quality rest and treat and prevent any little niggles they might be experiencing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Newsletter - March 2024 - EVENT WORK</image:title>
<image:caption>Back in January I was helping to treat runners at the Tadworth 10 in Epsom. It was a really good event and the weather was really kind to all the runners. The event was very well organised and I was lucky to work with Louise Acher in offering post-event sports massage. The event was well supported and lots of runners came for treatments which I think they appreciated. Hopefully Louise and I can work together at the event next year as it was a lot of fun!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ive had a bit of a decorating done in my treatment room and i’m very happy with the result. I wanted my room to feel a bit warmer and more welcoming so I have given the walls a lick of paint. I think the colour scheme is less clinical and it should feel more relaxing and comfortable for my clients. Hopefully new and existing clients will like what i’ve done with the place.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Newsletter - March 2024 - TRAINING AND CPD FOR 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>So i’ve been planning my training and CPD for 2024. There are a number of different courses I would like to do; to bring new experiences for my clients. In April 2024 I am attending an Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation course (IASTM). This will allow me to use certain instruments when treating clients as there are many benefits to using these instruments. I will write some move about this on my Instagram and website after I have done the training so watch this space! I am also attending a Massage Masterclass Workshop in June, offered by the ST School. This will give me the opportunity to mix with other therapists and learn and share different experiences with them. I’m very much looking forward to this and I should pick up some more tips and tricks to use in my clinic.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our son Finn is currently on a gap year (or two …) to pursue his dream of becoming a professional cyclist. Alongside a fantastic coaching team, Peter plays an integral role in Finn’s pursuit of this!!! Seeing Peter on a regular basis has helped Finn sustain a high level of physical well-being all year round. Thus, enabling his body to be in peak performance to be able to withstand the many physical demands of training he undertakes, alongside racing at an elite and UCI level. Finn has also gained much reassurance from Peter if noticing a ‘niggle’ in his body - being able to reach out to him quickly to check out concerns! Over the year that Finn and Peter have been working together, it has been so evident how much Finn respects and values all that Peter offers! Peter has and continues to share a genuine interest in ensuring Finn’s physical performance to enable him to be the best possible cyclist he can be!!! As parents, we do not underestimate the significant role he has contributed to all Finn has achieved over the last year. We cannot recommend Peter highly enough!!!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Finn Dunton’s Testimonial - Working with Peter over the past year has been fantastic. It has been super re-assuring having Peter there. This is in the terms of the massage which helps my muscles recover after tough races and training blocks. Along with the massage treatments it is also great being able to look at specific issues such as my knees and hips as these are two quite important parts of the body for me cycling, using different techniques to help these areas if there are any little niggles. Being able to do this is brilliant to my training as it allows us to manage the issue before it becomes a bigger problem. Peter is great too as he is “just a message” away! If I have an issue when away I can still talk to Peter if an issue arises again allowing me to manage the issue before it is becoming a bigger problem. In the last year as well as the “practical work” Peter has done with me the “theor”y side that has been just as beneficial. I now have a far better understanding of my body, how certain muscles connect to other muscles and what their functions are. Because of this I am now able to understand different parts of my body and what different feelings mean in certain areas. I am very grateful to Peter for helping me understand this! It has been an honour to work with Peter over the past year and I am very much looking forward to the coming years and could not recommend him enough. The care that is offered as well as the knowledge is second to none!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Newsletter - October 2023 - Hey Everyone. Welcome to my third newsletter which will give a little update on what I have been doing recently and what I am planning for the coming months. Summer’s over now and thankfully we had some lovely weather in September which definitely lifted my spirits! I’ve been busy over the last couple of months treating clients, doing some learning, working with a local football club and supporting a local cyclist who is hoping to become pro!. You can read a bit more about all of this below. I am off on holiday in October for a couple of weeks. Me and my husband are going to visit some friends in the USA for a few days and then a bit of a road trip through Georgia and Florida. I’m really looking forward to a break away, seeing friends, seeing a bit of the USA and enjoying some great food and drink! I hope you all enjoy the content of this newsletter, please feel free to give me any feedback you have or any ideas you would like to read about in future issues. Happy Reading!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Newsletter - October 2023 - Since November 2022 I have been working with Finn Dunton who is a young cyclist hoping to make it as a pro! I have treated Finn through both his training and race season, which has now come to an end. Finn had some great results this year and showed himself to be both a fierce competitor and a great team player. Finn has been coming to see me regularly for maintenance treatments to help with his recovery and to keep him moving well. There were also a few niggles to treat along the way too!. I am looking forward to continuing to support Finn though his 2023/2024 training and race season.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Newsletter - October 2023 - I have recently also been done some training to ensure I am unto date with the best evidence to ensure my treatments are effective.</image:title>
<image:caption>In September I studied with “Movement Therapy Education” in Birmingham to further my understanding of manual therapy and how best to use the nervous system to reduce pain and discomfort, as well and helping to improve movement. The course was called Dermoneuromodulation and it basically introduced how best to influence the nervous system by touching and moving the skin. It was a great course and I am already using lots of what I learned In my clinic when treating clients with pain and dysfunction.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Newsletter - October 2023 - I also did a webinar with the ST School on red flags, how to recognise them and when to refer to another healthcare professional. This is a really important topic and although I was familiar with red flags it’s always good to update your knowledge! The course was taught by a brilliant teacher and highlighted the importance of recognising issues which might be outside of the scope of practice of a Soft Tissue Therapist. Sometimes it is important to refer clients to a GP, A&E or a physiotherapist for further investigation or diagnosis. Luckily I know a great local physio who I can refer on to if needed!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Newsletter - October 2023 - In September I was back at Bewl Water offering treatments to the runners. This was the hottest day of the year and the runners were either doing a 10km, half, full or ultra marathon which, considering the weather, was a huge undertaking. Again the event was a huge success with all the runners saying how well “Hermes Running” organised the event. It’s great to be part of this and I really enjoy treating runners on the day.</image:title>

I’ll be preparing a short newsletter every couple of months which will (hopefully) have some interesting information about what is happening in my clinic. Occasionally i’ll also be sending out some self-help stretching and strengthening information so you can help yourselves at home, in-between visits to me. I’ll also try use this newsletter as a way of letting you all get to know me a bit better, what I have been unto at home, my holidays etc. The plan is to keep it very light hearted and easy reading! I hope you all enjoy the content, please feel free to give me any feedback you have or any ideas you would like to read about in future issues. Happy Reading!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Finn Dunton - Collaboration with a young cyclist hoping to make it as a Pro!</image:title>
<image:caption>As a sports and remedial massage therapist based in Chatham it has been my pleasure to work with Finn Dunton, a young cyclist, over the last few months; offering regular treatments to help his recovery and continue with his gruelling training regime. Finn started cycling at the age of 8, thanks to an advert his grandmother saw for a local cycling club. He loved cycling from the very first session and couldn't wait for training sessions at the club. Now at the age tender age of 18 he is preparing for his first season as a full time cyclist in the UK & Europe! Finn had some good results from his racing at the end of 2019, but ironically it was the COVID lockdown of 2020 when his training really intensified, with people noticing his raw talent and potential. From March to August 2020 Finn was training full time and absolutely loved it! He was convinced that he wanted cycling to be his “Full Time Job” and set his heart on becoming a full time cyclist.</image:caption>
