Who I Help in My Clinic (and How Soft Tissue Therapy Can Help You)

Introduction

One of the questions I’m most often asked is: “who do you usually treat?” The short answer is – quite a variety!

The answer is probably broader than many people expect. Although many people associate sports massage with professional athletes, in my Whitstable clinic I work with a wide range of people—from runners and gym-goers to office workers and those who simply want to move more comfortably and feel better in everyday life.

Every treatment is tailored to the individual, but here are some of the people I commonly help.

Runners and Endurance Athletes

As a runner myself, I understand the physical demands that running can place on the body.

Many of the runners I see come in with common issues such as:

  • Tight calves

  • Stiff hips

  • Heavy legs during training

  • Tight quads or hamstrings

  • Small niggles starting to appear

Often these problems develop gradually as training mileage increases. Regular sports massage can help reduce muscle tension, improve mobility and support recovery between sessions.

One runner I worked with after a 10k race described the experience like this: “I hobbled in and after my treatment was fully functioning the next day and ready for another run.”

Treatments aren’t just about fixing problems. They can also be used as maintenance during training, helping runners stay consistent and avoid injuries.

Active People and Gym Goers

Another large group of clients I see are people who train regularly in the gym or participate in sports such as cycling, tennis or football.

Training hard is great for fitness, but it can also create muscle tension and fatigue if recovery isn’t managed properly.

Soft tissue therapy can help by:

  • Reducing muscle tightness

  • Improving range of movement

  • Helping muscles recover after hard sessions

  • Identifying potential problems before they become injuries

I’ve worked with athletes training at high levels where regular treatment helps them sustain the intensity required for competition and reduce the risk of injury.

But you don’t have to be an elite athlete to benefit — anyone who trains regularly can feel the difference.

Neck, Back and Shoulder Pain

Not everyone who visits my Whitstable clinic is sporty.

Many people come in because they’re experiencing discomfort from everyday life — particularly neck, back or shoulder pain.

Long hours at a desk, stress, poor posture or repetitive work can all contribute to muscle tension and stiffness.

Treatment focuses on:

  • Easing tight muscles

  • Improving movement in the joints

  • Reducing pain and discomfort

  • Helping clients feel more relaxed

One client wrote after treatment:

“Peter has given more freedom in head rotation and shoulder movement, with a lot less discomfort.”

Often clients notice improvements not just in their pain levels, but also in their overall sense of relaxation and wellbeing.

Recovery, Relaxation and Wellbeing

Sometimes people come in simply because their body feels tight, tired or stressed.

Massage can be a valuable way to:

  • Reset the nervous system

  • Reduce stress and tension

  • Improve sleep

  • Restore a sense of balance

While massage can be deeply relaxing, it can also play an important role in maintaining the health of your muscles and joints.

Many clients choose to book regular sessions as part of their self-care routine.

Why People Choose Soft Tissue Therapy

My Approach to Treatment

Every treatment I give is tailored to the individual.

Before starting treatment, I take time to understand what’s going on with your body, your lifestyle and your goals. From there I use a combination of techniques to help reduce pain, improve movement and support recovery.

Where appropriate I may also suggest simple exercises or stretches that can help maintain progress between sessions.

The aim is always the same:

To help you move better, feel better and keep doing the things you enjoy.
