How Soft How Often Should You Have a Sports Massage?
How Often is Best?
One of the questions I'm asked most often is:
"How often should I have a sports massage?"
The honest answer is... it depends.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer because everyone is different. Your training, lifestyle, work and goals all influence how often treatment may be beneficial.
Some people come every few weeks as part of their routine, while others book when they start to notice muscle tightness or discomfort.
The important thing is finding a schedule that works for you and helps you stay active, comfortable and doing the things you enjoy.
If You're Training Regularly
If you're running, going to the gym or taking part in sport several times a week, your muscles are working hard.
It's normal to experience some tightness and fatigue, especially during periods of heavier training.
Many active people find that having a sports massage every 4–6 weeks helps to:
Reduce muscle tension
Improve movement
Support recovery between training sessions
Identify small niggles before they become bigger problems
Regular treatment isn't about fixing injuries – it's about helping your body cope with the demands you're placing on it.
If You're Training for an Event
When you're preparing for something like a marathon, half marathon or other sporting event, your training usually becomes more intense.
During these periods, some people choose to have treatment every 2–4 weeks, depending on how their body is feeling and the amount of training they're doing.
The aim isn't simply to loosen muscles. It's to help you recover well, keep moving comfortably and maintain consistency with your training.
If You Have a Desk Job
Sports massage isn't just for runners and athletes.
Many of my clients spend long hours sitting at a desk or working from home.
Neck, shoulder and lower back tension can gradually build up over weeks or months, often without you even noticing.
For many people, having treatment every 4–8 weeks can help reduce muscle tightness, improve movement and simply leave them feeling more comfortable day to day.
What If You Only Come When Something Hurts?
There's absolutely nothing wrong with booking an appointment when something starts to feel tight or uncomfortable.
In fact, that's exactly how many people first visit my clinic.
Once the problem settles, some people continue with occasional maintenance treatments, while others simply come back whenever they feel they need one.
There isn't a right or wrong approach.
My Advice
Rather than booking because you think you should, I'd suggest listening to your body.
If you're noticing:
Tight muscles that aren't easing
Reduced flexibility
Heavy or tired legs
Ongoing neck, back or shoulder tension
Recovery taking longer than usual
it may be a good time to book a treatment.
Every Treatment Is Personal
One thing I always say to clients is that treatment should be tailored to you.
Some people benefit from regular maintenance appointments, while others only need occasional treatment during busy training periods or when muscle tension starts to build.
During your appointment we'll discuss what's been going on, how you're feeling and what you're hoping to achieve, so we can decide what approach is likely to work best for you.
Thinking About Booking?
Whether you're training for an event, spending long hours at a desk or simply feeling tight and achy, sports massage can be a great way to help you move more comfortably and stay active.
